The employer for the majority of our members is the London Borough of Islington and regular meetings are held between unions and representatives of Islington Council. The arrangements for the education unions and other unions after many years of being treated separately have recently been combined.
Joint negotiating meetings are now held between representatives of NASUWT, NUT, NAHT, ASCL (formerly SHA), UNISON and GMB/Apex; LBI Children's Services and CEA@Islington (the private company which controls the schools/5-16 education part of Children's Services in Islington).

Health and Safety is covered by a separate committee which from March 2006 will cover the whole of Children's Services (previously only Education).

The situation is further complicated by the existence of a range of other local employers whose members are still represented by the local branches of the unions. Many of these members transferred from council employment under TUPE transfers. UNISON, T&GWU and GMB/Apex members are represented elsewhere in the authority by a separate negotiating structure.

In addition, the education service has been subcontracted in a large part to a private company who negotiate on behalf on Islington Education Department.
